A catering company based in Newhaven has been able to achieve and exceed their business goals after a Start Up Loan gave them the financial support they needed.
Peter and Leanne Blakey-Novis made the decision to start their own business so that they could spend more time with their 4 children whilst pursuing their passion for food. Red Light Bites was born in the summer of 2013 and began life as a market stall in Newhaven, selling lunch items and unusual meats.
Despite the business taking off initially, with minimal stock and equipment the pair struggled to make a profit. After approaching the Let’s Do Business Group for help this spring, their application for a Start Up Loan was approved – and with it came a much needed financial boost.
Start Up Loan Support in Newhaven
Leanne explains: “The Start-Up Loan scheme has completely transformed the business. We used the money to purchase a pop-up kitchen and vehicle. Before this, we didn’t have any transport which limited where we could trade hugely.
“Now we can attend much larger events, further afield as well as offering catering and meat deliveries. This has led to a huge increase in bookings, so much so that we are pretty much fully-booked until the New Year!”
The Start Up Loan scheme is a government initiative that makes start-up capital and mentoring accessible to fledgling businesses. The Let’s Do Business Group (LDBG) deliver the scheme throughout the South of England.
From a market stall selling lunches and unusual meats, Red Light Bites has already expanded. The company now offers a catering and delivery service, in addition to a pop-up kitchen at outdoor events.
Recently the entrepreneurial couple started supplying meat and chutneys to restaurants in Brighton on a wholesale basis and plan to continue expand this service.
They also plan to cater to more events on a larger scale, as well as festivals and fairs. In the long term they hope to secure a farm shop premises to sell their produce from.
