Two friends based in Surrey joined forces and with the help of a Start Up Loan opened a day-care and training centre for dogs and have just celebrated their first anniversary.
After becoming disenchanted with her day job, Caroline Heale (pictured) decided to follow her heart and, together with her business partner Alison Edwards opened Scallywags Dog Services.
Scallywags are based in Wanborough Business Park, West Flexford Lane in Wanborough.
Caroline and Alison have both owned and trained dogs for over 20 years, they combined their skills and experience to launch Scallywags in September 2014.
A year into their new life they have built a loyal customer base, looking after around 10 dogs per day, as well as running 4 training classes and walking 5 dogs per week.
Scallywags run classes for puppies, adolescent dogs and adults; their aim is to train you to train your dogs.
“The Start Up Loan provided the injection of cash we needed to secure our premises and the process helped us to think about matters in a business like way. The set up was fairly smooth, although waiting to hear about the loan was nerve wracking.”
Scallywags aim for the future is to buy some land and set up a small boarding kennels, as well as expanding their exercise field so it contains more stimulating activities for the dogs. They want to create a more natural environment and a pool for the summer.
“It has been a very interesting year and I have not regretted taking the chance on this at all. We have both learned a lot about ourselves as well as how to run our enterprise successfully.”
