A tearoom with a twist has opened in Bexhill Old Town thanks to a Start Up Loan.

The Old Town Tea Room offers delicious vegetarian and vegan cakes for all to enjoy, homemade at their premises located on Church Street. The teashop also showcases the work of local artists and was opened on 12th April by the Mayor of Bexhill, Brian Kentfield.

Bexhillian Kelly Murphy (27) had been baking egg-free and vegan cakes as a hobby for six years when she decided to pursue her dream of running her own café.

Tired of working in her minimum wage job, Kelly wanted to challenge and express herself through baking as a full-time occupation. She approached Let’s Start Up to help her get the new venture off the ground and applied for a Start Up Loan (SUL) of £7,500.

Kelly said:

“The Start Up Loans scheme made my dream a reality and if it was not for the financial help and support from Let’s Do Business, this project wouldn’t have been possible.

“My mentor has been great, she’s helped and advised me on where I could source supplies and equipment from to get me up and running. She acts as a soundboard for any worries I may have and offers support whenever needed.”

The SUL scheme is a government-initiative set-up in the autumn of 2012 to enable would-be entrepreneurs to set-up new businesses with the help and support of a mentor and access to an affordable loan.

LDBG deliver the SUL scheme across the South of England and since September 2012 have lent in excess of £3 million to more than 500 businesses, resulting in over 1000 jobs being sustained or created.

Since The Old Town Tea Room opened their doors, the café has been bustling with customers delighted with the addition of a new and exciting café to the area. In the future Kelly hopes to expand her teashop into other Towns in need of a tearoom with a twist.
