Am I eligible for a Start Up Loan?
Although we do our best to make it easy for people to kick-start their enterprises, not everyone is eligible for a Start Up Loan.
To be considered as a candidate for a Start Up Loan, you must:
- Have a sound business proposal
- Start Up Loans are available to businesses yet to launch or those that have been trading for up to 12 months, although in certain circumstances this may be extended to 24 months1
- Believe you are likely to be refused a bank loan
- Not have been bankrupt or had an IVA (Individual Voluntary Arrangement) or DRO (Debt Relief Order) registered in your name
- If you’ve had other credit issues in the past, please be sure to declare these in full when you complete your loan application.
You must also:

Three easy steps to starting up your new business
Register your interest in a Start Up Loan by filling out a Starting Your Enterprise form on this website. The Starting Your Enterprise form asks a variety of questions to determine your eligibility for a Start Up Loan, and also to assess if your business idea is sound and justifiable, so please answer all the questions fully.
At this stage, the form is not a final application for Start Up business finance and, if you need help or advice, one of our friendly team can guide you through the process. Click here for all of the ways to get in touch.
A more detailed, step-by-step guide to the Start Up Loans process can be found here.
Your Starting Your Enterprise form will be evaluated by the Let’s Do Business Start Up team, who will then contact you to go through the form and explain how you complete your business plan and the application process.
Successful applicants will be granted access to funding in the form of a loan and will be appointed a mentor who will assist with problem solving and offer impartial guidance and encouragement to help get your business off the ground.
Your mentor will be an entrepreneur who has run their own business – often starting from nothing – and has come out of the other end of the process a successful businessperson.
Your mentor will be a source of invaluable advice and knowledge as you begin your journey from start up to established enterprise.
