In recent years, Hastings and St Leonards-on-Sea have burst onto the cultural and artisan scene, with galleries, antique shops and boutiques emerging in the town. With the help of a Start Up Loan, a West End stylist has recently opened a luxury hair salon on Norman Road, further fuelling the area’s creative demeanour.
With over 20 years in the hairdressing industry, stylist Kenneth Madgin saw an opportunity he couldn’t miss and launched upmarket hair salon Halcyon Hair.
“Running my own salon had always been on the backburner and, when the opportunity arose to open a new salon with Aveda, it was just too good to miss,” explained Ken, who relocated to the coast three years ago. Aveda is an internationally recognised and high profile premium hair care brand, with only 400 exclusive salons in the UK.
Start up loans in Hastings
Ken approached the Let’s Do Business Group (LDBG) to help raise additional finance to cover the escalating start up costs. He applied for a loan in December 2013 through the Start Up Loans (SUL) scheme and his application for £9,500 was approved.
Ken commented: “The Start Up Loan was vital in contributing to the refurbishment of the shop. I had invested my own funds into the salon as well, but the loan enabled me to have the necessary capital to complete the renovation and get things off the ground.”
The SUL scheme is a government initiative backed by serial entrepreneur and former Dragons Den star James Cann set up to help kick-start new businesses with the help of low costs loans and mentoring. The LDBG administers the scheme across Sussex, Surrey, Kent and Hampshire.
Mentor Alastair West commented: “It’s been a pleasure working with Ken and his considerable experience as a stylist in Mayfair will be a great asset to the town. I can see his salon going from strength to strength.”
After a few frustrating delays, Halcyon Hair opened in March and, since then, Ken has been extremely busy growing his client base and has had a very positive start. The first few months’ takings have far exceeded expectations and, if things continue in this way, Ken will shortly be looking to take on a member of staff.
Despite being relatively new, Halycon Hair is certainly making its mark in the town, receiving praise from local residents and businesses. With expansion plans for the future as well, Kenneth Madgin is a name we are sure to hear much more of in the future.
